Walsingham in Norfolk, with its miracle working image of the Virgin Mary, was one of the principal European pilgrim resorts, even eclipsing Canterbury in importance by the later 15th century. Mary's purity was symbolised by a lily and in many pilgrim badges this was represented in stylised form by the fleur-de-lys.

Origin and Date: This example was found in Salisbury, and dates from the 15th century.
