Fox Saying Grace Worcester Cathedral, Replica Church Woodcarving 17cm / 6.75 Inches High

£19.99
SKU OD-056-Fox saying Grace

Taken from the medieval carvings (C1380.) found upon the Misericords and supporters from within the choir stalls of Worcester Cathedral. This magnificent and most fascinating carving shows a Fox saying Grace to another Fox during a church sermon. The interpretation and most likely meaning of this depiction would be to suggest that the Fox represents the clergy, whom were considered by the ordinary person to be crafty manipulators of both the nobility and commoner. This may suggest both the carver and onlooker’s discontent with their venerable position in an unfair medieval class structure and the power that the church authorities had over them. Ironically the carver could produce this very clever piece of thought applied through a carving without the knowledge and awareness of the ruling classes, which was positioned under their seats on which they sat while giving these church services. The carving has survived through centuries without virtually any damage and remains in pristine condition. This reproduction has been taken from the original carving and captures all the fine detail produced by the master craftsmen that carved this piece over 600 years ago. Designed to hang upon a wall, this reproduction makes a stunning display and interesting focal point.
