St Martin of Tours Pilgrim Badge, Boxed With Brief Historical Descripition

£12.75
SKU LR-P49

Pilgrim badge depicting the legend of the cutting of the cloak. St Martin of Tours was an extremely popular medieval saint; particularly in France, but with his cult spreading to much of Europe. By tradition, he was a soldier in the Roman army, with his most popular legend telling how he cut his cloak in two in order to share it with a near-naked beggar. That night, Martin received a vision in which the beggar revealed himself to be Christ. Martin vowed to abandon his military career for the life of a monk - later becoming Bishop of Tours. He was the first confessor saint - one who became a saint through an exemplary life rather than through martyrdom.
