Nearly five hundred years after the Reformation, the Church of England is coming to a fuller appreciation of the saints, and their contribution to our spiritual heritage. Medieval accounts of saints' lives were often marred by confitsion and contradictory oral traditions, the writers' desire to tell an edifying story, and the exploitation of the commercial opportunities of pilgrim shrines. Embellished with improbable miracles and unlikely legends, these accounts made the saints seem remote and unbelievable figures, but recent theological scholarship has cleared away the accretions of centuries, enabling us to see the saints as real people who faced up to the challenge of living out the Christian faith, often in conditions of great difficulty or danger - and who made mistakes like everyone else. This lively and informative volume presents the experience of men and women from the days of the early Church to modern times - people from many walks of life, including some from other Christian traditions. They represent the 'great cloud of witnesses' who enrich our understanding of the Christian faith, endow us with a legacy of two thousand years of Christian values in action, and inspire us to walk faithfully in the way of Christ.

Available For Same Day Dispatch Monday to Friday. Reflections on the Gospels for Sunday's and Holy Days, Years A, B, and C. Week by week, in thousands of places of worship and in homes, Christians gather around the Scriptures to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed. The Revised Common Lectionary, now used widely by church communities throughout the world, has restored the Early Church principle of continuous readings through the Gospels: Matthew in Year A, Mark in Year B and Luke in Year C with additional readings from John in all three years. This pattern of reading enables the narrative of each to unfold and invites reflection on the distinctive style and approach of each of the Evangelists. Following the Gospel through the Year aims to enrich and deepen understanding by providing for each Sunday, Holy Day and major festival. It offers: * a summary of the essential message of the Gospel reading * a link to the other readings of the day * an extended meditation and reflection * an illustrative quote from the spiritual classics * a closing prayer With additional background notes on each of the Gospels and of the seasons of the Christian year, this book is an inspiring resource for worship leaders, preachers and those who help to lead the intercessions, and a reliable guide for personal devotional reading at all times.

Please Note this book is a Print on demand Publication. Once the only rite in use which Catholics around the world knew from childhood, its usage ended with the Second Vatican Council's ruling that liturgy should be celebrated in peoples' own languages. The Latin mass thus became the preserve of various traditionalist societies.Two years ago the Pope declared that the celebration of the Latin mass was to be restored and regularly offered alongside the modern mass. Today, priests trained in the modern rite are learning how to celebrate the Latin mass and there is a demand for liturgical resources to accompany it, especially as it follows a different calendar and lectionary. There in 1833 John Keble preached a sermon that gave voice to widespread and growing fears of increasing state control of the Church and erosion of its status. At the same time, Roman Catholics were enjoying new freedoms in society and Anglicans who regarded themselves as loyal to the Catholic tradition, despite the interruption of the Reformation, saw this as an opportunity to promote Catholic theology in the Church of England. Keble's sermon sparked an immediate and active response and the Oxford Movement sprang into life. Publications flowed from its luminaries which included John Henry Newman and Edward Bouverie Pusey. Ninety influential tracts together with Newman's legendary sermons and work by other writers, including some novels, focused on the themes that today characterise Anglo-Catholicism: a high doctrine of the Church as a divine society, the importance of the sacraments, insistence that Anglican clergy were priests in the Apostolic Succession with sacerdotal power, the quest for personal holiness. Energised by the vitality of the old, true faith, parish life began to be transformed. Religious life revived for the first time since the Reformation, remarkable social work in slum parishes was accomplished and a distinctive liturgical style emerged. Firmly I Believe offers a wide selection of the writings of the Tractarians and other supporters of the Oxford Movement, introduced with a useful commentary and explanation. This unique volume is both an ideal starting point for students and scholars and a rich treasury of Anglo-Catholic devotion and theology.

Same Day Dispatch Monday to Friday. Established in Oxford in 1866, its charismatic founder, Richard Meux Benson worked closely with American priests and just four years later a congregation was founded in Massachusetts that flourishes to this day. The charism of the order embraced high regard of theology with practical service, fostered by an emphasis on prayer and personal holiness. Cowley, a poor and rapidly expanding village on the outskirts of Oxford, provided ample opportunity for service. At its height, the English congregation had houses in Oxford (now St Stephen's House) and Westminster where figures such as C S Lewis sought spiritual direction. Now no longer operating as a community in Britain, this definitive and comprehensive history records its significant contribution to Anglicanism then and now. It was the heyday of Anglo-Catholicism in the Church of England. Religious life was flourishing for the first time since the Reformation. The first shock came when the Abbot of Caldey, a flamboyant character noted for luxurious tastes, and his monks went over to Rome. This book sifts and evaluates recent and varied sources to produce a more coherent narrative of the events that led to Augustine's mission, his complex political and geographical journey through Merovingian France, and the outcomes in Kent and ultimately for British Christianity. Soon it turned to training priests, offering an inexpensive yet thoroughly professional road to ordination. Kelham broke the class barriers fencing the Anglican ministry, and became the largest theological college in England. The students lived as part of a religious community, but this was no narrow Anglo-Catholicism. Fr Kelly and his students at the SCM camps at Baslow and Swanwick were ecumenical pioneers. What made the difference was that Kelham, following Fr Kelly, took theology seriously, theology as a clue to the whole of human life. Their best-known member, Fr Gabriel Hebert, made liturgy and the Bible live for 20th century Christians, and continued Fr Kelly's ecumenism. The Society flourished in Australia, with a Kelham-down-under and many novices; there were provinces too in Asia and Africa. Like other religious orders, SSM had a crisis in the 1960s and 1970s. Their colleges closed, and many members left. The Society adjusted to small priories, and a greater variety of work. It has gone back to pre-theological training and to inner London, where it began. This is the history of a Society trying to discover the will of God. How do we know what is God's will? This is an area of research that has hitherto attracted little attention, a neglect which is surprising given the significant role that Manning played in many of the most important ecclesiastical events of the time.

Available: Delivery Time 3-5 Working Days From Order.

Author:

James Pereiro

Format:

Paperback

Page Count:

374

Date Published:

Jun 2008

Dimensions:

143 x 212mm

Publisher:

Gracewing

ISBN:

9780852444054

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0269/4424/1742/products/cardinal-manning-by-james-pereiro-800x800-17634.jpg?v=1593032507
augustine-hoey-by-a-pinchin-and-g-jolly
Trembling on the Edge of Eternity, Msg Augustine Hoey, by A Pinchin and G Jolly

Trembling on the Edge of Eternity. Fr Augustine Hoey - A Biographic Memoir. This volume, now in its second edition, tells the remarkable story of Fr Augustine Hoey, a Catholic priest with his roots in the missionary tradition of Anglo-Catholicism, in both the UK and Africa. Written to mark his 100th birthday this book draws on the personal recollections and writings of Fr Hoey as well as from those who have met him and, in many case, had their lives changed by him. Through various moments of drama, such as surviving a wartime bomb and witnessing the tightening grip of apartheid in South Africa, Fr Hoey’s active life has concealed an inner desire for contemplation and intercessory prayer. After becoming a Roman Catholic in the 1990’s his work, as confessor, spiritual guide and preacher was based at Westminster Cathedral. At the age of 98, he moved to Walsingham to fulfil the vocation he felt as an undergraduate on his first visit to the Shrine.

Author:

A Pinchin & G Jolly

Format:

Hardback

Page Count:

148

Date Published:

2015

Dimensions:

147 x 223mm

Publisher:

Gracewing

ISBN:

9780907077695

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0269/4424/1742/products/augustine-hoey-by-a-pinchin-and-g-jolly-800x800-17641.jpg?v=1593032541
fathers-and-anglicans-the-limits-of-orthodoxy-by-arthur-middleton
Fathers and Anglicans, The Limits Of Orthodoxy by Arthur Middleton

Fathers and Anglicans helps us to re-appropriate a vital part of the Anglican approach to the living reality of Christ. This book deals with the very great significance attached by classical Anglican divines to developing a ‘patristic mind’ which is neither afraid to reason nor ashamed to adore…it gives us vignettes of attractive Christian lives like that of Lancelot Andrews. Catholics of the Anglican Patrimony. When in 1993 Aidan Nichols revived the long-dormant idea of an Anglican Uniate Church, united with the See of Peter but not absorbed, the reaction of many was incredulity. The ideal of modern Ecumenism was, surely, the corporate reunification of entire Communions. This he roundly declared to be unrealistic, for the Protestant and Liberal elements in Anglican history (and Anglicanism's present reality) could never be digested by Roman stomachs. What was feasible was, rather, the reconciliation of a select body Catholic enough to be united, and Anglican enough not to be absorbed. Just over a dozen years later Pope Benedict XVI, responding to the petitions of various Anglican bishops, promulgated the Apostolic Constitution Apostolorum coetibus and the deed was done. The three 'Ordinariates' now established for 'Catholics of the Anglican Patrimony' in Britain, Australia and North America have been described as the first tangible fruit of Catholic Ecumenism. In this short book Nichols reflects on the historical, theological, and liturgical issues involved. He also shows the congruence of the new development with Benedict's wider thinking, and outlines a specific missionary vocation for reconciled Anglicans in England.

Author: Aidan Nicols
Format: Paperback
Number of Pages: 96
Published: Jun 2013
Dimensions: 142mm x 216mm.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0269/4424/1742/products/the-personal-ordinariate-of-our-lady-of-walsingham-by-aidan-nicols-800x800-17680.jpg?v=1593032730
the-pelican-in-the-wilderness-by-ivan-clutterbuck
The Pelican in the Wilderness, by Ivan Clutterbuck

The Pelican in the Wilderness. A Journey into the Fullness of Faith. William Gordon Wheeler (1910-1998) was Bishop of Leeds from 1966 until his retirement in 1985. Educated at Manchester Grammar School and Oxford University, he was ordained into the Anglican ministry in 1934. After curacies in Brighton and Chesterfield, he left the Church of England and converted to Catholicism in 1936. He studied in Rome and Upholland for the Catholic priesthood and was ordained by Cardinal Hinsley in 1940. Wheeler served as a curate in Edmonton, a chaplain of Westminster Cathedral, editor of the Westminster Cathedral Chronicle and chaplain to the Catholic students at London University. His rise within the ranks of the Catholic Church was meteoric. In 1954 he was appointed Administrator of Westminster Cathedral and ten years later, as Coadjutor Bishop of Middlesbrough, he attended the final sessions of the Second Vatican Council and was deeply influenced by the experience. In 1966 he succeeded Bishop George Patrick Dwyer as Bishop of Leeds, where he responded to the twin thrusts of Vatican II – renewal and reunion – and faithfully tried to implement the Council’s Decrees and Constitutions. Never entirely comfortable with some of the more radical effects of Vatican II and seriously disturbed by social legislation which was anathema to Catholic teaching, he sought to manage change with fidelity, understanding and compassion. Many liturgical changes distressed the traditionalist Wheeler but the ecumenical momentum generated by Vatican II thrilled him. This book looks at his management of diocesan liturgical and structural change and also his response to the legal, ethical and social challenges to the Church’s authority and teaching through the 1960s and beyond? his reaction to Humanae Vitae, the Abortion Act and the defection of priests, his view of national and international events and his attempts to foster ecumenism and develop the Apostolate of the Laity. James Hagerty relates Wheeler’s thoughts and actions to the writings of Cardinal John Henry Newman.. In Newman, himself a convert Anglican clergyman, Wheeler perceived a model theologian, a perceptive Church historian and the epitome of the educated Catholic priesthood. First Fruits of the Oxford Movement. When William Lockhart died in London in 1892, The Tablet declared that perhaps no man, except Cardinal Manning, had so strong a hold on varying classes and masses of men. An outstanding figure, he was received into the church by Fr Gentili, and immediately joined the Institute of Charity. He is remembered for founding two important missions in London; Our Lady and St Joseph, Kingsland and St Etheldreda’s, Ely Place. Alongside his pastoral labours, he encouraged young writers and publishers and helped run several Catholic journals.
